Case study - Multithreaded monitoring of services and applications

Customer

The Polish National Health Fund (NFZ) Branch in Bydgoszcz is a state administration unit providing healthcare services funded with public resources. The Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province Branch of the National Health Fund funds reimbursed drugs and healthcare services provided to the insured. The institution commissions and oversees proper provision of healthcare services in more than a thousand centres in the region. At the same time, it processes the services for around 2 million patients and directs them to specific medical centres. In conformity with the signed contracts, the Branch distributes around PLN 3.5 billion every year.

Challenge

The National Health Fund Branch in Bydgoszcz is an institution serving public functions, which needs to collect, to process and to manage sensitive data on patients and business partners in order to provide quality services. Due to the function served by the institution, its compliance with the highest safety standards is of utmost importance. In order to provide services round the clock, the organisation requires also high availability of its IT systems. The necessity to manage many systems, which simultaneously exchange data additionally raises the bar.

Solution

In response to the pressing needs, an up-to-date catalogue of IT services provided by the National Health Fund was established. Taking into account the high number of IT systems involved and their intricate character, our customer recognised the need to implement thorough monitoring of IT applications and services. Eximo Project suggested launching an independent F5Wizard system, which addressed the individual needs of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province Branch. The monitoring system was configured with the help of many agents monitoring assets simultaneously from the inside (the customer’s network) and the outside (the Internet).

Outcome

Multithreaded monitoring of IT assets, which correlated services and applications provided by the National Health Fund, gave an insight into the systems used, allowing for a precise trend analysis of the server and network infrastructure. As a result, the procedure of planning the collection, exploration and processing of large amounts of data was streamlined. Currently, when dedicated warning levels are exceeded, administrators immediately get alert notifications in accordance with the individually planned schedule. F5Wizard provided the National Health Fund administrators with necessary information regarding events and incidents, which allowed our customer to take proactive and reactive measures. Eventually, the periods of unavailability of the IT infrastructure were shortened.

References

The diversity of IT systems and the need to maintain high performance present our IT staff with a real challenge. Implementation of the F5Wizard system and round-the-clock monitoring allowed us to forecast the directions of infrastructure development. Thanks to the considerable increase in the availability of key systems, we can now achieve goals set for our unit more effectively.
